When Carla first moved here in 1985, this was the only part of the house that was habitable. It was once occupied by one of the contadini (tenant farmer) families, and still has most of the original features, including the original fire place (that gives the apartment its name), wooden beams, the old terracotta tiles, and two original arched windows found during the restoration have been rescued and look into the old Frantoio, the old olive pressing room.
It is a roomy, bright and breezy apartment with two bedrooms, one king-size double with en-suite bathroom, and another king-size double with en-suite bathroom that can also be made up as a twin bedroom. Your kitchen has a lovely dining table and a comfortable sofa, with wonderful views over the olive groves and forests, and you can use the shady gazebo nearby as your private outdoor dining area. The entrance to this 1st floor (i.e. not ground floor) apartment is through the main copper-clad gates via the old courtyard at the heart of the house. The staircase also leads to your private balcony over the courtyard below.
It is one of my favourite places to sleep as it has the best sunset views and holds many fond memories for us.
